Computer science teaching professor featured in Labor Day news story


Congratulations to computer science teaching professor Mia Minnes, who is featured in the Labor Day issue of UT San Diego!
Minnes was hired this year after serving as a postdoctoral visiting assistant professor in the Department of Mathematics at UC San Diego from 2010 to 2014. In addition to teaching many introductory and advanced undergraduate classes in the department, she works on outreach and research projects, including the five-week residential Summer Program for Incoming Students, which she co-developed. She's also the faculty sponsor for the Summer Internship Symposium for the Department of Computer Science and Engineering.

Q&A with Janis Jimenez, intern at ViaSat



Janis Jimenez, a computer science major at the Jacobs School of Engineering at UC San Diego, is participating in ViaSat Inc.’s internship program this summer. The internship program selects student interns every summer from the best universities to work at ViaSat and contribute to real projects. For example, these projects include assisting in test and development of ViaSat satellite communications systems. Janis is working at the company’s Carlsbad office with the Architecture-based Enterprise Systems Engineering (AESE) department. In this Q&A (courtesy of ViaSat) she talked about her experiences.

 Q: What is the focus of your internship project?
A: Our department is AESE.  We are working on a web application that combines business metrics for the company along with security.  That was our project summary when we were hired. Things have stayed pretty vague because they have let us have some input.
Q: Why did you want to intern at ViaSat?
A: I heard from other people that I would be working with a team of interns. I have only been a single intern on a team of full time employees before. So it was something new to try out.
 Q: What is the best part about working with your team? Or supervisor?
A: The best part is that we are all in the same room, so we get to communicate a lot. If we get stuck we can just ask each other for help or we come up with better ideas by brainstorming on the whiteboard.
Q: What is the one thing you are hoping to accomplish during your internship?
A: I am hoping to pick up several new technologies, which I have already started doing. Specifically new languages and software.
Q: What has been your favorite meal at ViaSat so far?
A: I really like the meal at the most recent Tech Talk. It had two different types of pastas, bread, and a dessert. It was great.
Q: Favorite place to work on the Carlsbad campus?
A: I like to stay in the office. We have an office with a window and it is pretty nice in there.
Q: What is one word that describes your internship experience?
A: Collaborative
Q: After the internship ends, what is one thing you will take with you?
A: Experience of the office atmosphere, especially working with a team in a full time job.
Q: One fun fact about yourself!
A: I played the piano and clarinet.

This Jacobs School alumna is featured in Elle

Brina Lee was Instagrams's first female engineer but in this Elle interview, she confesses that she likes her pictures without a filter. The Jacobs School alum talks about why she likes coding, what engineering is and the gender gap at tech companies.  (Lee earned a bachelor's in communications and a master's in computer science from UC San Diego).

Engineering can be a bunch of things. In all cases, engineering is building things, whether it be with your hands like a mechanical engineer, or with code. To me it’s a creative tool to build communication in many different ways. And solving problems.


 A lot of people think that coding is boring, but you have to understand the impact that you’re having by submitting one or two lines of code. Just submitting one extra line of code into the Facebook repository impacts a billion people. Same thing with Instagram!

Legos, lunch and career advice with WIC @ UCSD

Legos, lunch and conversation were on the menu at a recent Ladies Lego Lunch organized by the Women in Computing group here at UC San Diego and at Google. Undergraduate and graduate students got a chance to network with female engineers from Google and get career advice. They also chowed down on some good food. As an ice breaking activity, students competed to put together a Lego version of Google's iconic green Android logo. The student or team that finished first won.





SWE hosts fun Girls' Night In at Jacobs Hall

Members of the Society of Women Engineers here at UC San Diego got to kick back and relax during a Girls' Night In February 21. Dancing, games, desserts and mocktails were all part of the program. The latter included a ginger ale Classy Lassy and a Lime Mimosa. Desserts included chocolate-chip muffins, pies and Oreos. Who says engineers don't know how to have fun?

Never too early to hack like a champion

The Women in Computing group at UC San Diego hosted a beginner's programming competition Saturday, Nov. 23 in the CSE Building. The contest was designed specifically for undergraduates who haven't yet taken upper division courses.
Students could work in teams of two or by themselves. They had to answer a series of questions coded in JAVA--and got free pizza.

Jacobs School computer science professor recognized at celebration of women in computing

They rubbed shoulders (and got their picture taken) with the likes of  the senior vice president of knowledge at Google, Alan Eustace, and Megan J. Smith, vice president of Google[x], the company's division that develops leading edge products, including Google Glass. 

A large group of UC San Diego students and alumni attended the Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing Oct. 2 to 5 in Minneapolis. In fact, UC San Diego was in the top 10 schools for the number of students registered for the event.

Many of them were there to cheer on Christine Alvarado, a computer science professor at the Jacobs School, who received an award for her innovative teaching practices to attract girls and women to math, computing and engineering. Alvarado received a $5000 prize from the Anita Borg Institute. The prize and award are named for A. Richard Newton, the former dean of the College of Engineering at UC Berkeley.

Alvarado received the award for spearheading the implementation of practices that changed the culture within the department of computer science at Harvey Mudd College, where she taught before joining UC San Diego. The practices led to a dramatic increase in the number of women studying and pursuing careers in computer science. More than 40 percent of Harvey Mudd computer science students are women--the highest percentage in the nation, according to the Anita Borg Institute.

Student leader shares her views about how to get more women in engineering

Meera Ramakrishnan, a senior majoring in computer science, was recently interviewed by email by Gary Robbins, science writer at UT San Diego. Robbins was writing about why there are so few women in engineering. Meera wound up being quoted in the story, which you can read here. She and Gary allowed us to share their whole email exchange, which we believe makes a valuable contribution to the discussion about the obstacles that keep women out of engineering.
Meera is one of the co-founders of the undergraduate chapter of Women in Computing at UC San Diego. She will join Goldman Sachs as an analyst in January 2014.

Q: Over the past 20 years, the presence of women in the sciences -- especially chemistry and biology -- has greatly increased. In fact, women now earn more bachelor's degrees in those fields than men. During the same period, the number of women in engineering has stayed flat or gone down. I'd like to know your thoughts about why women aren't going into engineering and computer science in larger numbers.

It is an observable fact with a complex answer.

A: It starts from childhood as girls are given dolls and dresses while the boys get to play with Legos and puzzles. 

In middle school, moms might teach their daughters how to take care of a sick animal while her father teaches her brothers how to replace a brake light or fix a radio. 

I went to an all girls high school which had only one basic computer science class so many of my classmates were not given a chance to explore engineering whereas the all boys high school next to my school had over nine advanced computer science classes. In 2007, this all boys high school received about $9.8 million in total gift revenue whereas it took my high school over ten years just to raise barely $12 million. This gives the all male high schools a built in advantage to provide more and better technology classes and services for their students in comparison to the all female schools.

Through socialization, the majority of women are able to communicate emotions such as kindness and compassion better than the majority of men. Thus, more women seem to turn towards education and medicine rather than engineering as it seems to provide a more direct meaningful impact and very tangible results in society. However, if more women were exposed to engineering, they would realize how much significant work could be produced through STEM.

Q: Can you suggest ways to increase the number of women in these fields?

A: Men and women are equally intelligent and have the potential to be successful engineers. However, schools, competitions, workplaces, and society need to understand that men and women have different interests and motivations. From hosting a few coding "hackathons" in my university, I learnt a few key points.

Most of women seemed to enjoy working on problems that required discussion and collaboration. They enjoyed working on business initiatives that had a positive impact in the world - not simply coding for free pizza and red bull.

We need to start to design engineering school curricula and competitions that are women friendly so that we can stop living in a "man's world." 
We can design and share toys with girls that interest them as well as encourage them to use their critical thinking skills and expose them to engineering through toys such as the one developed by a Stanford student, Goldie Blox. http://www.goldieblox.com/ Editor's note: Goldie Blox's creator is Debbie Sterling, a Stanford-trained engineer.

Harvey Mudd and a few other universities are doing wonderful jobs in redesigning their courses to interest and retain women into computer science.

"through an innovative, three-part plan, the percentage of women CS majors has shifted from 12 percent to 35 percent and reached a high of 40 percent for the class of 2011."
Q: What impact would there be on society if more women went into engineering? Would we see new or different products and services? 

A: By watching today's most impactful women in technology, I would expect to see more interdisciplinary and products and services that provide a direct and meaningful impact in society if more women entered engineering.
Maja Mataric, a professor at USC, builds robots to help special needs patients such as autistic children, stroke patients, elderly suffering from Alzheimer's, and much more. 

Vicki Hanson, an IBM Researcher, has also used her skills to help companies comprehend how to redesign software and help people with special needs through the help of computers. 

Padmasree Warrior, Cisco's CTO, has started to help and mentor women founded startups. 

Laura Mather, CSO and Co-Founder of SilverTail, created a non profit meant to fight spoofing, pharming, and email-based security threats.  

By watching today's impactful women in technology, I would expect to continue to see more interdisciplinary  products and services that provide a direct and meaningful impact in society if more women entered engineering similar to the examples I mentioned above.

Robotic Stingray Takes a Dip


It's called the Stingray. It's an autonomous underwater vehicle that can be loaded with a wide array of sensors to monitor the health of marine habitats. And it's being built by a team of undergraduate students and their graduate student adviser.

It's all part of Engineers for Exploration, a program that allows UC San Diego students to partner with the National Geographic Society, the Hubbs SeaWorld Research Institute and San Diego Zoo Global.

On a recent sunny afternoon, students took the Stingray out for a test drive at Canyonview Pool here on the UC San Diego campus. Jennifer Batryn, a student at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo who was visiting for the summer, got into the pool. Perry Naughton, the project's graduate student adviser, supervised the test.

WIC Hosts First Girl's Day Out Outreach Event

The Women in Computing student organization at UC San Diego, better known as WIC@UCSD, hosted its first Girl's Day out outreach event April 20 at the Jacobs School of Engineering.
The goal was to attract more high school girls to the fields of computer science and engineering and information technology. Girls took lab tours, developed an Android app and listened to women who work in industry and academia. More info on the event here.

Photo of the Week: Enspire, Electrical Engineering Style

Janelle Shane, electrical engineering PhD student teaches kinds about lasers as a  part of Enspire 2013.

Electrical engineeringgraduate student Janelle Shane is pictured in the latest Photo of the Week. Janelle participated in Enspire (part of Engineer’s Week at the Jacobs School) and was busy showing a group of middle school students how the invisible light from an infrared laser would show up as a spot on an infrared-sensitive card.


A question for Janelle:

“What do you think the students responded to most in your demo?”

Her answer:

“Once I explained to them that I didn't know how to make a light saber, they were excited most about the fact that visible light, infrared light, radio waves, and microwaves are all the same thing—it’s just that our eyes can only see the visible light. They were excited to hear that if our eyes could see microwave radiation, a microwave oven would appear to be glowing.”

Janelle’s demo was in the Nanoscale Optics Lab of Shaya Fainman, professor and chair of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, among many other labs. The demo introduced middle schoolers to tiny, yet powerful, lasers used to create the optical circuits of the future.
