Engineering student org helps dramatically lower cost of HIV monitoring equipment

Watch bioengineering major Gillie Agmon explain how her student organization, Engineering World Health, helped bring down equipment costs for a test for HIV drug resistance from $80,000 to $2,000. She spoke this spring at TEDxUCSD.
The organization works in partnership with the Maputo Central Hospital in Mozambique. More than 30 undergraduates are working on the project, from design, to manufacturing, to distribution.
"I learned how engineering can be used to solve public health issues," Agmon said.
